Single-Mode

A single-mode waveguide propagates only the lowest, or fundamental, mode. This is characterised in a fiber by the simplest intensity profile with position; a bright spot at the centre of the core and exponentially decreasing intensity moving away from the peak in any radial direction outward, and into, the cladding.
