Sensing

In principle, with the right interrogation technique, the propagation of light can be used to sense anything, from ambient temperature to gravitational waves. Some examples of fiber optic sensors include distributed temperature sensors (DTS), distributed acoustic sensors (DAS), fiber optic gyroscopes (FOGs) and fiber optic current sensors (FOCS).

In the medical industry, the use of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) and other optical sensors; parameters, such as temperature, position and pressure, can be measured along the length of the optical fiber. This provides the medical team diagnostic information to improve outcomes. Fibercore’s portfolio of small clad, high Numerical Aperture (NA), polyimide coated fibers are particularly well suited to be used within in vivo sensing applications.
