To incorporate some rare earth ions into the core of a MCVD fiber, a solution doping technique is used which involves a porous frit. The frit is a loose deposit of silica particles, akin to a snow drift, which is very porous and allows a solution with rare-earth metal ions dissolved in it to percolate into the gaps between the loosely packed silica particles. Once the solution is dried, heat is applied to anneal the silica particles into a solid layer of fused glass, trapping the rare-earth ions into the molecular network.
