Femtosecond FBG

Unlike standard Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), which are typically inscribed using a ultraviolet (UV) continuous wave laser, it is possible to manufacture FBGs using pulsed lasers in either the UV or Infra Red (IR) wavelength range. These FBGs are created through a different physical mechanism to the standard UV CW FBGs, which allows higher operating temperatures to be used as they are more resilient to annealing. Femto FBGs can be written through acrylate, high temperature acrylate, silicone and polyimide coatings, meaning that the coating is not required to be removed for FBG inscription. This allows the FBGs to maintain a higher mechanical strength due to not having been mechanically weakened by mechanical or chemical removal of the coatings.
