Coating

The coating is a non-glass layer(s) applied to the optical fiber with the objective of offering mechanical protection to the glass.

The standard coating structure in the fiber optic industry is made out of two layers (typically known as primary and secondary coatings) of standard acrylate materials able to withstand up to +85°C of temperature (continuous exposure). Other coating materials such as: High Temperature Acrylate (HTA), Polyimide (PI), Metals or Carbon are also applied to the optical fibers in single or dual layer structures depending on the applications and environmental conditions where the fibers have to be used.
