Broadband

In optics the term broadband indicates a system where the wavelength region involved is relatively wide. In a telecoms application this may be because there are many narrow-band channels spaced across a broadband region of the optical spectrum, which could be involved in an amplifier system; this is part of the reason broadband internet connections have high capacity. Some light sources, such as an LED or ASE are broadband because their output is over a wide range of wavelengths, usually with a peak wavelength toward the centre and a spread of power across wavelengths either side. The wavelength range of a broadband system is generally 10s or 100s of nm, though it does depend to some extent on the application as to what is regarded as broadband.
