Borosilicate glass

Silica (SiO2) can be co-doped with boron (B), which can induce the huge directed stresses associated with bow-tie fiber and the SAPs in Fibercore HiBi fiber. Boron doped glass has a differing thermal expansion to silica; stressing the fiber core when the drawn fiber cools from a temperature where both borosilicate SAPs and the rest of the fiber glass structure are free flowing and unstressed. Borosilicate glass also has a large attenuation around 1550nm, which can be used to form attenuating fiber and can be an attenuation mechanism in HiBi fiber with modes propagating far above cut off.
