SMM900 has been developed to compliment the technology leading CP1100 fiber, manufactured by Fibercore Limited.

The CP1100 is a 125 µm cladding diameter, all silica double-clad fiber with a pump guide region of 90 µm diameter, and a single mode core which is doped with ytterbium. The pump guide interface at an average diameter of 90 µm is 'petal' shaped to maximise the efficiency by perturbing skew and axial rays, providing very effective mode mixing.

To enable you to utilise this fiber to its full potential, Fibercore has developed SMM900 - a circularly symmetric, 'dual-clad' fiber that combines both singlemode and multimode characteristics. The NA of the SMM900 multimode core is matched to that of CP1100. The singlemode NA is 0.19 - compatible with SM980(4.5/125), other 900/1500 nm dual-wavelength fibers and also matching the doped core of CP1100. SMM900 is ideal for the manufacture of WDM devices for pump and signal combination in high power, cladding-pump lasers and amplifiers.

The singlemode core is germanium doped silica with a pure silica pump guide, and the outer region has a depressed index, with respect to silica, providing the pump guide NA of 0.23. These fibers splice and handle just like any other all silica fiber.

Due to the versatility of the manufacturing technique, a wide range of fibers can be realised. For example the pump guide diameter and / or the glass diameter can be varied to match the pump source. The NA and cut-off of the singlemode central core can also be tailored to match the rare earth doped section.
