A long-established standard in the demanding fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) industry, 80 µm fibers can demonstrate clear superiority over their more conventional 125 µm counterparts in a wide variety of applications in both telecommunications and sensing.
Lower intrinsic bending stress reduces susceptibility to static fatigue and enchances lifetime in coiled applications (see Section 1, HB-G). Smaller physical volume saves space – an increasingly scarce commodity within the instrument racks of today’s multi-channel, DWDM systems.
Despite these strengths, the lack of compatibile ancillary products has limited general acceptance of 80 µm fibers. Now, high performance, fused-taper couplers are available, fabricated from SM800(4.2/80) and SM1500(6.4/80) – so, if your application really needs 80 µm, you can specify it, with increased confidence.
